At Quality Stone Concepts (QSC), we believe the foundation of a thriving community is built not just with stone and steel—but with opportunity, mentorship, and a shared investment in the future. This week, we were proud to open our doors to students from the Home Builders Institute (HBI) for an immersive introduction to the world of countertop fabrication. It was more than a tour; it was a hands-on exploration of the skilled trades that power the construction industry—and a glimpse into viable, rewarding career paths for local youth.

A Partnership Rooted in Purpose

This special event was made possible through the collaboration between The Home Depot Foundation and HBI, which recently announced up to $500,000 in grants to support youth trades training nationwide. Locally, QSC’s commitment to this cause is ongoing and deeply personal.

In partnership with the Virginia Beach Education Foundation, QSC supports The House Students Built—a groundbreaking program that has led to the construction of eleven single-family homes and is currently working on its twelfth at 1512 Indiana Avenue. More than just bricks and mortar, each project serves as a classroom without walls, offering:

  • Hands-on training to over 60 Career and Technical Education (CTE) students every year.

  • Over $850,000 in scholarships and grants awarded from project profits.

  • Over $150,000 per house in donated time and materials from community partners.

QSC plays a vital role in these builds by providing countertop fabrication, cabinet installation insight, and mentorship—ensuring that students see how precision, creativity, and craft come together to produce a finished product that homeowners love.

Home Builders Institute: Changing Lives Through Trades Education

The Home Builders Institute (HBI) is the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of trade skills training and education for the building industry. Their mission is simple yet powerful:

“We change lives by educating, inspiring and preparing individuals for careers in the building industry.”

HBI programs focus on training, credentialing, and placing students into construction careers—giving them the tools to build a stable, meaningful future. All training is offered at no cost to students, removing one of the largest barriers to entry.

This life-changing work is made possible through the generous contributions of corporate sponsors, private donors, and state and local grant support. HBI’s commitment to accessibility and impact aligns perfectly with QSC’s vision of developing talent locally and building long-term career pathways in the 757.

Today’s Exposure, Tomorrow’s Careers

During the recent HBI student visit, participants learned about the end-to-end process of countertop production—from digital templating and CNC fabrication to polishing and final installation. Our team demonstrated how modern manufacturing technologies intersect with traditional craftsmanship to deliver exceptional results.

Just as importantly, we discussed what it means to build a career in the trades—what to expect, how to grow, and why there’s never been a better time to pursue work that is both essential and entrepreneurial. Students asked thoughtful questions and left with a deeper appreciation for the industry and the possibilities it holds.
