Marble counter-tops can give any home a timeless and classic feel. Marble is typically known for its bold veining, crisp white color, and it’s unique properties. One thing to consider is that marble is significantly softer than granite and quartz. Marble ranges between a 3 and 5 on the Moh’s Hardness Scale, whereas quartz and granite are both above a 7 on the Moh’s Hardness Scale. This means that marble is more likely to scratch and etch than granite or quartz. Marble is calcium carbonate based, which means acidic foods, cleaning products, etc. will cause etching. A sealer will help protect marble tops from acidic foods and cleaners, however, it needs to be applied at least once a year. Utensils, knives, abrasive cleaning products, etc. can cause the marble to scratch. Keep in mind to always use non-abrasive cleaning products and a cutting board on your marble counter-tops. Just remember, marble may not be the best choice for kitchen countertops, however, if you understand the maintenance and upkeep of the material, a marble kitchen may be just right for you.
